These mashed sweet potatoes are an amazing autumn side dish. They're creamy, fluffy, customizable, and easy to make. Naturally sweet on their own, but a touch of maple syrup brings them to the next level.

    About This Recipe

Whenever I go out to eat, I always substitute my French fries for sweet potato fries. Sure, it costs a few extra dollars, but sweet potatoes beat regular potatoes any day. For some reason, restaurants never offer the same option for mashed potatoes. Maybe there's not enough demand for it, or people haven't had it before, but if more people knew how tasty it was, I bet it would be everywhere!

These mashed sweet potatoes are sweet, creamy, and fluffy, and one of the best side dishes to make with sweet potatoes. My wife declared this as her favorite sweet potato side dish yet. Coming from her, that's high praise, because she loves sweet potatoes. And I agree with her 100%. This recipe is magnificent.

The best part of this recipe is that you can easily adjust the sweetness to your own taste. While you can leave them plain, I think they truly shine with just a light drizzle of maple syrup (about ยผ of a cup). But I know many people like it even sweeter, so feel free to add more to your own taste!

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Sweet potatoes: I used 3 pounds of sweet potatoes. This makes a big portion, enough to feed 4 people for at least 2 days. Feel free to scale this recipe down if you're cooking for less.

Salt: We need two tablespoons for salting the cooking water. This seasons the potatoes while they're cooking, so you don't need to add any additional salt after you boil them.

Butter: Gives the potatoes a creamier texture. If you're looking for a healthier option, olive oil works just as good (but it will taste more like olive oil).

Milk: A good amount of milk is needed to make the sweet potatoes fluffy. I suggest starting with ยฝ a cup and adding more to reach your desired consistency.

Maple syrup: While these mashed sweet potatoes are naturally sweet, a touch of maple syrup helps them really shine. Start with ยผ a cup and add more as necessary,

STEP 3: Mash the sweet potatoes in a large bowl. Fold in the butter, followed by the milk, followed by the maple syrup. Enjoy!
