π₯‘ About This Recipe
Today, I'm starting a series on my favorite budget meals. I'm starting with the cheapest one: Indomie noodles!
If you don't know what Indomie is, it's a brand of instant noodles from Indonesia. They're super popular all over the world, and they're my absolute FAVORITE.
Growing up, I ate these all the time (like, almost weekly), whether it was a quick lunch or late-night snack. They quickly became a staple for me, especially during my college days.
Eventually, I found ways to elevate them so they not only tasted better but also had a bit more nutrition.
π What are Indomie Noodles?
Indomie is a brand of instant noodles from Indonesia. It comes in many different flavors, including chicken, vegetables, and curry, just to name a few, but the absolute most popular is their mi goreng flavor.
In Indonesia, you'll see people enjoying it as a snack, breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They're even served at roadside food stalls, sometimes with hot coffee or iced tea!
π² How to upgrade it?
Over the years, I've discovered many ways to jazz up Indomie noodles and make them taste like legit meals. These are some of my favorite ways:
- Aromatics: Just a little bit of garlic, ginger, or scallions add a ton of depth to the noodles. Ginger and garlic should be sizzled in oil, but scallions can be tossed in at the end.
- Sauces: Pantry staples like sriracha, soy sauce, fish sauce, peanut butter, or sesame paste can be used to add heat and umami and make the sauce creamier!
- Vegetables: Vegetables like corn, peas, carrots, and celery add texture and freshness.
- Protein: Make it a more complete meal with rotisserie chicken, cooked shrimp, eggs, or tofu.
- Toppers: Finish with sesame seeds, furikake, green onions, or cilantro for extra flair and texture.
π§ Ingredients
This is my favorite combination of ingredients to elevate Indomie!
- Indomie ramen: Use any flavor you want, but mi goreng is my top choice. It's got a sweet and salty taste that I can't get enough of.
- Oil: For frying the egg and vegetables.
- Egg: You can either fry it for crispy edges or soft boil it.
- Garlic: Use freshly minced for the best flavor.
- Vegetables: I'm using frozen peas and carrots today, but you can use others like corn, celery, or mushrooms.
- Green onion: If you don't like the onion flavor too strong, try to only use the green parts.
- Sriracha (optional): I LOVE adding a tablespoon of Sriracha for heat.
πͺ Instructions
STEP 1: Cook the Indomie noodles according to the package instructions. Reserve ΒΌ cup of the cooking water and drain the rest. Set the noodles aside.
