My Oreos bring all the boys to the yard, there like, it's better than-- Wait, that's not how that song goes. Anyways...
In this blog post, I'll show you how to make my copycat Baskin Robbins Oreo Milkshake. The recipe is super simple; only three ingredients are required, but getting the ratio right is essential for a smooth and creamy milkshake. And, not to toot my own horn, but I think my version tastes better than the original!
⭐ My Copycat Guarantee
I'll only post a copycat recipe if I'm confident it tastes the same as, if not better than, the original. People have very specific expectations for how copycat recipes should turn out, so I work extra hard on them.

🥤 Deconstructing the milkshake
Milkshakes can be difficult to deconstruct because everything is blended. It can be challenging to differentiate all of the individual ingredients and their ratios. Essentially, you have to taste it and just make an educated guess about what's in it.
But luckily for us, Baskin Robbins publishes the entire ingredient list for their Oreo milkshakes online. Here's a condensed version of the list since they provide a bit too much detail, but nothing important is left out:
Oreo® Cookies 'n Cream Ice Cream: Cream, Nonfat Milk, OREO® Cookie Pieces, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Contains 2% or less of: Whey Powder, Cellulose Gum, Mono and Diglycerides, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Polysorbate 80, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Annatto (Color); Milk; Simple Syrup: Sugar, Water, Contains 2% or less of: Potassium Sorbate (Preservative), Citric Acid.
Baskin Robbins Website
There's a lot of mumbo jumbo, but essentially, it boils down to Oreo cookies 'n cream ice cream, milk, and simple syrup.
Oreos-flavored ice cream can be pretty pricey, so I don't think it's cost-effective for most people to purchase it. So why not use plain Oreo cookies and vanilla ice cream? It'll taste exactly the same but will be significantly less expensive. Plus, you can use the leftover vanilla ice cream for other desserts like my Strawberry milkshake.
🍪 Crumbs Vs. Cookies
There are two main ways to incorporate Oreos into your milkshake: either by using their regular cookies or their Oreo baking crumbs, which are simply a powder of the chocolate wafer that surrounds the filling.
I recommend using the cookies because they have a sweetened white filling. Sugar can't be added directly to milkshakes because it doesn't dissolve easily in cold liquids. If you use the baking mix, you'd have to prepare a simple syrup or use a liquid sugar, such as honey or corn syrup.
🥛 Ingredients
- Oreo cookies - Use whatever variety of Oreo cookies you have - double stuffed, regular stuffed, it doesn't matter.
- Vanilla ice cream - I think vanilla ice cream tastes the best, but you could also try chocolate or Oreo Cookies 'n Cream ice cream. On another note, you might consider using "frozen dessert," a cheaper ice cream substitute that fast-food restaurants most likely use.
- Milk - Use whole milk for the best flavor and texture; that extra bit of fat makes the Baskin Robbins Oreo Milkshake much more creamy.
- Whipped cream (optional for serving) - Make your own whipped cream or purchase a canister from the supermarket.
- Maraschino cherries (optional for serving) - a preserved, sweetened cherry. This is purely for aesthetic purposes; you don't need it.
🔪 Instructions
Step 1. Into the blender
Combine vanilla ice cream, Oreo cookies, and milk in the blender.
Step 2. Blend
Blend the ingredients for 15-30 seconds until smooth and creamy. Use your blender's tamper to push down ingredients if air pockets form and your blend gets stuck. Pour into a tall glass and top with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.
💡 What is a Blender Tamper?
A blender tamper is a tool that comes with some high-speed blenders to aid in the mixing and processing of thick, difficult blends. It's typically a long, stick-like tool that fits through an opening in the blender lid and is used to break up air pockets by pushing ingredients into the blender's blades while it's running.
Here's a video on how to use a tamper for a Vitamix blender.
💭 Top Tips
- Freeze your serving cups (if they're freezer-safe) for 15 minutes so the milkshake stays thick and cool for longer!
- Don't blend for too long! Some high-speed blenders are so fast that they can generate enough heat to make soup, and we don't want the milkshakes to melt.
- Use your blender's tamper to break up air pockets so the milkshake blends smoothly without adding more milk to get things moving. Check the blog post for a video tutorial on how to use a Vitamix blender tamper.
- Consider using "frozen dessert" for the best restaurant flavor copycat. Restaurants are more likely to use "frozen dessert" than real ice cream because it's less expensive. "Frozen dessert" is made with vegetable oil.
- Don't add ice. It'll water down the milkshake!
- Consider freezing your Oreo cookies so the milkshake stays colder for longer.
👩🏻🍳 Substitutions
- Vegan - Did you know Oreo cookies are vegan? My mind was blown when I found that out. To make this vegan, replace the milk and ice cream with your favorite vegan substitutes.
- Oreo Cookies 'n Cream ice cream - If you love the taste of Oreos, use Oreo-flavored ice cream instead. Because the ice cream is already flavored, you can omit the Oreo cookies entirely or keep them in for double the Oreo goodness. However, for sweetness, add one tablespoon of simple syrup or honey.
- Oreo crumbs baking mix - You can substitute with Oreo crumbs instead of cookies. Replace cookies with ⅓ cup of crumbs, and add one tablespoon of simple syrup or honey.
👨🏻🍳 Variations
- Mint Oreo - Replace Oreo Cookies with Oreo Mint Creme Cookies or add ¼ to ½ teaspoon of peppermint extract, depending on how minty you like it.
- Extra Chocolate - Replace vanilla ice cream with chocolate ice cream to make it extra indulgent.
- Peanut Butter - My mouth waters just thinking about this. Add one tablespoon of peanut butter to give it a savory and nutty flavor.
- Strawberry - Yup, you read that right. Strawberry and Oreo milkshakes are actually a thing. Add one tablespoon of strawberry jam or ½ cup of frozen strawberries.
🥡 Storage & Leftovers
Storage: Freeze any leftover Baskin Robbins Oreo milkshake in an airtight, freezer-safe container for up to a month. Allow it to defrost in the refrigerator for one hour before re-blending with milk and any other ingredients.
📖 Recipe FAQs
Yes, it requires a bit of arm work, though! You'll need to crush the Oreo cookies before mixing them with the other ingredients. This is actually an excellent case to use Oreo crumbs baking mix instead of Oreo cookies.
Then, use a whisk to mix the crushed Oreos with the vanilla ice cream. Then, pour in the milk slowly while whisking vigorously. Serve immediately.
Since this process takes some time, I recommend freezing your mixing bowl and cups so the milkshake doesn't melt quickly!
Yes, but it won't be as creamy. That said, you can double the amount of milk, pour it into a freezer-safe container and freeze it for two hours until it becomes semi-solid. Then follow the recipe as directed.
To make it thicker, you can use more ice cream than milk. Use your blender's tamper to break up air pockets so it blends smoothly.
Also, I recommend refrigerating your serving and blender cups (or freezing them if they're freezer-safe) so that the milkshakes don't melt as quickly.
