This Tartar Sauce is creamy and tangy with a delicious crunch from minced pickles. It's extremely easy to make in 5 minutes and goes great with fish and chips, fish cakes, crab cakes, and more.

    About This Recipe

Tartar sauce is one of those condiments that is astronomically better when you make it at home. Store-bought tartar is just never as good. Its texture is "gloopier", less crunchy, and it just doesn't taste fresh at all.

Last week, my wife and I went fishing and we caught some small shiner perches. Being the fish-and-chips fan that I am, I decided to batter them up and deep-fry them. Halfway through, I realized I didn't have a sauce for them, so I quickly made some tartar sauce from scratch using ingredients in my fridge. I realized how tasty it was, and my wife said I should put it on my blog. So here we are!

This tartar sauce is EXTREMELY simple. All you need is mayonnaise, a jar of pickles, onions, and a tiny bit of sugar. I never knew just a few ingredients could make such delicious tartar sauce. It actually makes me a bit angry that store-bought tartar is so bad since it's not hard to make a good one.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Mayonnaise: This is the base of the tartar sauce. A high-quality mayonnaise like Hellman's or Miracle Whip will be the best.

Dill Pickles: The important thing is to use some of the pickle juice from the jar to add some tang to the sauce. If you don't have dill pickles, another option is relish, but make sure to add some lemon juice, dijon mustard, or vinegar to balance the sweetness.

Onions: Onions add that pungent kick that brings the tartar sauce to life.

Sugar: This is optional. I know many of you are watching your sugar intake these days, so feel free to omit it. I do think a little bit of sugar makes it taste way better, though.

    Instructions

ingredients arranged in bowl, but unmixed.

STEP 1: Simply combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and mix. The tartar sauce tastes best if you let it rest in the fridge for 10 minutes. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to one week!

Thank you for this quick easy recipe using staples! Was in a pinch for a quick sauce after buying fresh fish on a whim from a local fisherman, and this was perfect.
