After making their honey mustard dip, I wanted to give a try at their ranch sauce. It is very easy to make and if you want to replicate their snack wraps, you will need this recipe. I’m using a base of sour cream, mayonnaise, and buttermilk. The sour cream helps thicken the sauce so you can spread it onto the wraps.

🍟 About This Recipe
The ranch dressing at McDonald's is one of my favorites. You can get it on their chicken snack wraps or as a side with chicken McNuggets. It is creamy, tangy, and has just the right amount of garlic and herby flavor.
I tried making snack wraps not too long ago, and they turned out really good! I am still working on perfecting the recipe, but in the meantime, you can try this ranch recipe. It is the same one I will use in my homemade wraps, and I swear it tastes just like the original.
🧄 Replicating At Home
When I first made this recipe, I began with a basic ranch recipe that I aggregated from a few different cookbooks. Most of the recipes included a base of buttermilk and either mayo or sour cream. They also included garlic and some combination of spices. The spices are usually where each recipe differed.
To figure out the McDonald's spices, I decided to consult their website. They actually list their ranch sauce ingredients online. Here are the important ones:
Soybean Oil, Water, Cultured Low Fat Buttermilk, Distilled Vinegar, Sugar, Egg Yolk, Sea Salt, Garlic Puree, Black Pepper, Onion Powder, Yeast Extract, Salt, Parsley.
The main spices are black pepper, onion powder, salt, and parsley. Surprisingly, dill is not included, even though it was one of the most popular spices I saw in recipes.
Also, the base is most likely made with mayo. It is not specifically listed, but "soybean oil" and "egg yolk" are common ingredients in commercial mayo, so they probably use it. For home cooking, I also like adding some sour cream because it helps you get a thicker texture.
🧂 Ingredients
- Mayonnaise: My favorite brand of mayonnaise is Hellman's. When I used to work in fast food, this is what most chains used.
- Buttermilk: This is a standard ingredient in ranch sauces. It adds tang and creaminess at the same time. You can add more or less to change the consistency of the sauce. If you like it thinner, you will want to add more.
- Sour Cream: McDonald's doesn't use this, but I think it is important for making ranch sauce at home. It helps us get a thicker texture.
- Spices: Dried parsley, onion powder, garlic powder, ground black pepper, and salt.
- Garlic: Powdered garlic is not enough, you need some freshly minced garlic as well.
- White Vinegar: Be careful with the amount, as too much will make the sauce runny. I actually prefer using citric acid powder to maintain the thickness, but most cooks don't have that.
🔪 Instructions
STEP 1: In a small bowl, whisk all the ingredients, then refrigerate for 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the salt to dissolve.
STEP 2: The sauce is now ready to use. You can use it immediately or store it in the refrigerator for up to one week. Try it on all your favorite wraps and sandwiches or as a dip for chicken, pizza, and vegetables. Enjoy!
This recipe will yield about 1 ¼ cups of McDonald's Ranch Sauce.
