The McDonaldβs McNuggets are one of the more iconic items on their menu. My only problem is the amount of dipping sauce they give you is criminally low for the number of nuggets. I always run out of the sauce, so the last time I had them, I made my own honey mustard sauce at home. It is surprisingly easy and anyone can make it.

π§βπ³ Replicating At Home
I replicated the recipe by looking at the ingredients on the McDonald's website. Here they are for your convenience:
"Water, Sugar, Soybean Oil, Distilled Vinegar, Mustard Seed, Honey, Corn Syrup Solids, Egg Yolks, Contains 2% Or Less: Salt, Cellulose Gel, White Wine, Xanthan Gum, Spices, Turmeric And Paprika Extract (color), Sodium Benzoate (preservative), Yeast Extract, Cellulose Gum, Natural Flavor, Maltodextrin."
If you're not familiar with ingredient lists, the most prominent ingredients are always listed first. So in this case, water is the #1 ingredient, followed by sugar, then soybean oil, etc..
The interesting part is that sugar is listed as #2, but honey is listed as #6. That means McDonald's uses more sugar than actual honey in its honey mustard sauce. This is not surprising though, as sugar is way cheaper than honey, and you only need a little bit to give the sauce a honey taste.
The remaining ingredients are just ingredients in mayonnaise and mustard: soybean oil, distilled vinegar, egg yolks, etc.
π§ Ingredients
To replicate the sauce, I'm using a combination of honey and sugar, mayonnaise, dijon mustard, and white vinegar.
For the mayonnaise, I recommend a high-quality brand like Hellman's. I worked in the fast food industry for many years, and this was one of the more popular brands. Try to use full-fat as the taste will be much better.
πͺ Instructions
STEP 1: In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients and whisk until homogenous. Use it immediately as a dip for chicken nuggets, or toss it with vegetables for a yummy salad.
The sauce stays fresh in the refrigerator for up to five days in an airtight container.
π₯ How To Use This Sauce
The recipe makes about β cup of sauce. If you have leftovers, the sauce can be used for a lot of other recipes. Here are some ideas:
- Dipping: Chicken nuggets, chicken tenders, baked pretzels, fried shrimp, onion rings, fries, or even vegetables like carrot sticks and celery.
- Salad dressing: For salads, you'll need to thin the sauce with a little bit of water, vinegar, or lemon juice. Then toss the dressing with mixed greens and vegetables.
- Sandwiches: Spread it on sandwiches, wraps, or burgers.
