Homemade Dinner Rolls are so easy to make. Made with simple pantry ingredients, they're soft, fluffy, and delicious. My recipe only takes about 10 minutes of prep; the rest is just waiting for them to rise and bake.

    About This Recipe

Back in the pandemic days, I got really into bread baking. One of the things I baked a lot of was homemade dinner rolls. I've made them at least a dozen times since, and here are the lessons I've learned to make them super soft and fluffy.

    1. Use a stand mixer. A stand mixer is great because it has no trouble mixing a sticky dough. We want the dough to be somewhat sticky to keep the buns moist. If you knead by hand, you'll most likely need to add extra flour, and that will make the buns dry.
    2. Give the buns enough time to rise! A lot of recipes say that the buns can be made in only 30 minutes. That is a flat-out lie! Buns need at least one hour of rising time (preferably even more) to become soft and airy. I also recommend doing a double rise, as that gives the buns a better structure on the inside.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

All-purpose flour: Always fluff the flour beforehand. Then, spoon the flour into a measuring cup and level it off with a knife. This will ensure you do not overmeasure the flour.

Warm milk: Starting with warm milk will speed up the rising time. I use whole milk, but any type of milk, even nondairy alternatives, will work.

Vegetable oil: Gives the crumb moistness and richness. You can also use butter, but I prefer oil because it's easier to measure for recipes.

    Sugar: For sweetness.

Instant yeast: I like instant yeast because you do not need to activate it beforehand. I like adding it directly to the wet ingredients to dissolve it evenly.

Salt: To bring out all the flavors.

    Egg: For richness and structure.

    Instructions

wet mixture whisked in stand mixer bowl.

STEP 1: In a stand mixer bowl, mix together the milk, oil, sugar, yeast, salt, and egg.

STEP 2: Add the flour and mix with the dough hook for 4-5 minutes. The dough will be quite sticky (try not to add extra flour, as that will make the buns dry).

dough doubled in size after first rise.

STEP 3: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and let rise for 30 minutes in a warm place.

STEP 4: Grease your hands and shape the dough into 15 balls. Arrange the balls in the baking pan. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
