This easy Wonton Soup recipe tastes just like your favorite Chinese takeout! My mom used to make this for us growing up, and now I'm happy to share the recipe with everyone. In this recipe, I use frozen wontons because they're so convenient, but feel free to make your own if you'd like.

    About This Recipe

Wonton Soup is a classic dish at Chinese restaurants and buffets. Growing up, my mom used to make it for us all the time. Her version is very simple. A broth is made using ginger, garlic, chicken broth, and soy sauce. Then wontons are simmered in the broth. My mom says a lot of the flavor of the soup comes from boiling the wontons directly in the broth, so make sure you don't preboil them in another pot.

Growing up, my mom did not use MSG in her food. But if you want your wonton soup to taste like Chinese takeaways, you should go buy a bag at an Asian supermarket. MSG is not the evil ingredient that most people think it is. In fact, it is completely natural, derived from seaweed. If you like, just add half a teaspoon to the broth, and it will give that flavor that the restaurant versions have. That said, I never add MSG to my version at home- I think it's very flavorful as is.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Frozen wontons: Any variety of frozen wontons will work. The ones at Chinese restaurants are made with either 100% pork, 100% shrimp, or a combination of both. You can find these in the frozen section of Asian supermarkets or some American grocery stores.

Vegetable oil: For sauteeing the garlic and ginger. It also gives a better texture to the soup as they will coat the wontons as you eat them.

Garlic and ginger: These form the aromatic base for the soup.

Chicken broth: I use low-sodium or "no salt added" chicken broth. You can also just use water.

Soy sauce: Typically, wonton soup is only seasoned with soy sauce.

Toasted sesame oil: Optional, but this adds a toasty aroma to the soup.

Green onions: For garnishing at the end.

STEP 3: Add the frozen wontons. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook the wontons according to package directions. Another method that Chinese families use is to cook the wontons for 1 minute after they start floating.
