🍗 About This Recipe
If you've tried Dairy Queen's chicken strip or steak finger basket, you know how delicious their gravy sauce is—it's savory, creamy, and perfectly peppery.
This sauce isn't just for chicken and steak fingers; it goes well with other dishes like biscuits, mashed potatoes, and green beans. You can practically put it on anything.
The recipe is simple to make and only requires five ingredients. It's a southern-style country gravy. Simply make a white roux and flavor it with pepper and salt.
🏠 Replicating At Home
When replicating recipes at home, I usually look for ingredient lists online, but surprisingly, there's no official info on Dairy Queen's gravy – not even on their website.
For this recipe, I consulted several cookbooks for a basic white gravy recipe, and after a few trips to Dairy Queen, I found a copycat that comes pretty close.
I'm certain Dairy Queen uses cornstarch as their thickening agent (since their gravy has a glossy texture), but we'll use flour to make the best gravy possible.
🧂 Ingredients
- Butter: Use unsalted butter so we can control the levels of salt. If you have bacon grease, you can also use it, giving it a richer and smokier flavor.
- Flour: Use all-purpose flour. We mix it in a 1-to-1 ratio with butter for the perfect amount of thickening.
- Milk: Milk serves as the liquid base for our gravy. That's right, no cream is required. The best flavor comes from whole milk, but any milk percentage will do.
- Black Pepper: I recommend using freshly cracked black pepper. Preground pepper is much milder in flavor.
- Salt: Enhances all the flavor and makes the gravy taste good!
🔪 Instructions
STEP 1: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add flour and stir constantly for 2-3 minutes until the color changes to a light golden and stops foaming.
STEP 2: Slowly whisk in the milk until smooth and creamy. Add salt and black pepper, and cook for one more minute. Taste the gravy and add extra salt or pepper to your preference.
🥡 Storage & Leftovers
Storing: Store leftover gravy in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheating: Reheat leftovers by microwaving or cooking on medium heat on the stovetop. If the sauce is too thick, add a tablespoon of water to thin it out.
