    About This Recipe

If you're looking for something a little EXTRA special and decadent, then you've got to try my double chocolate pancakes! They're made with real cocoa powder for a true chocolate flavor all the way through, and laced with tons of chocolate chips to give every bite some melty texture. If you have a chocolate lover in your house, they're going to love these!

My chocolate pancakes come together with simple pantry staples and are better than anything you'll get from a box. I love serving them with a side of homemade chocolate sauce, made with only two ingredients: heavy cream and chocolate. I prefer dark chocolate to keep things less sweet and even more chocolatey, but you can use whatever your favorite chocolate is.

Fun fact: I love the way these pancakes taste after being refrigerated. The chocolate chips inside the pancakes harden and give them a really nice texture when you chew them. My wife thinks I'm weird for that, but just give it a try!!

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients for chocolate pancakes.

All-purpose flour: I use all-purpose flour in all my pancake recipes. It keeps things simple, and the pancakes always come out light and fluffy.

Cocoa powder: Use unsweetened cocoa powder to prevent the batter from getting too sweet.

Baking powder: I use one tablespoon of baking powder to give them a nice rise in the pan. Make sure you use baking POWDER, and not baking SODA, which is completely different and will not make your pancakes fluffy.

Salt: A little bit of salt amplifies the chocolate flavor.

Milk: Whole milk will give you the richest batter, but a lower percentage milk works just fine in this recipe.

Granulated sugar: Since the chocolate sauce already has plenty of sweetness, you don't need much in the batter itself. I add about ยผ cup.

Vegetable oil: Keeps the pancakes moist and tender. You can use any cooking oil you prefer. Even olive works well. Melted butter also works.

Eggs: Bind the batter together and add structure to the pancakes.

Vanilla extract: Rounds out the chocolate flavor and adds warmth to the batter. Use a good-quality pure extract for the best taste.

Chocolate chips: You'll need these for the batter and the chocolate sauce. I prefer dark chocolate for both, but you can use whatever kind you have.

Heavy cream: For the chocolate sauce. If you're in Canada, heavy cream is called whipping cream.

    Instructions

    dry ingredients whisked in bowl.

STEP 1: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

    wet ingredients whisked in bowl.

STEP 2: In another bowl, whisk together the milk, oil, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract.

chocolate chips added to bowl of batter.

STEP 3: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix. Fold in the chocolate chips.

STEP 4: For the chocolate sauce, add the heavy cream and chocolate chips to a small saucepan. Heat over medium-low and stir constantly until the chocolate is melted.

    batter scooped into small pan.

STEP 5: Heat a lightly greased skillet or griddle over medium-low heat until hot. Scoop ยผ cup of batter per pancake onto the skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes, until bubbles form on top and the edges look dry.

pancake flipped in skillet to show cooked side.

STEP 6: Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Repeat with the remaining batter, adding more butter or oil to the skillet as needed. Serve warm with the chocolate sauce.
