Puppy Chow (also known as Muddy Buddies) is a popular party snack from the Midwest. It's made with Chex cereal, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar! Super easy to make and great for sharing with a crowd any time of the year.

    About This Recipe

I know my dog would love these, but chocolate means he's out of luck. These really do look like tiny bits of dog kibble. Every time I reach for the bag, I can see his ears perk up like he's getting a treat. Too bad for him, these are for humans, and I promise you, you're going to love them!

If you're not from the Midwest, then yes, this recipe (the name, especially) might sound completely ludicrous, but I'm telling you it is a real thing. I like to think of it as a dessert version of Trailmix. It's one of my favorite recipes for sharing with a crowd, bringing on trips, or whenever. You can easily eat a handful without knowing, so be careful because they are addictive.

Puppy Chow is typically served at room temperature, but it is my opinion that it tastes best cold. I store mine directly in the freezer and bring it out just before serving. They have a bit more crunch, and the texture of cold chocolate is just amazing... especially in the summer. The Puppy Chow tends to clump together, so I gently smash the bag on the counter to break it into clusters.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Chex cereal: You can use either rice Chex or corn Chex.

Peanut butter: I recommend a smooth, processed peanut butter like Skippy or Jif because they melt more easily.

Chocolate chips: I personally love using dark chocolate in dessert recipes because the bitterness plays well with the sweetness.

Powdered sugar: This is absolutely required for the recipe.

    Instructions

chocolate chips melted in large pot.

STEP 1: Melt the chocolate in a large pot over low heat, stirring constantly. (You can also do this in a microwave in short 30-second intervals)

peanut butter stirred into melted chocolate chips.

STEP 2: Stir in peanut butter until smooth.

Chex cereal folded into chocolate mixture in pot.

STEP 3: Remove from heat and gently fold in the cereal until coated. Avoid being too rough, otherwise the cereal is going to get crushed.

Chocolate coated Chex added to Ziplock bag with powdered sugar.

STEP 4: Pour the cereal into a large Ziplock bag. Add the powdered sugar, and shake to coat. You may need to add a tiny bit more powdered sugar to get every piece coated.

STEP 5: Store at room temperature, in the fridge, or even in the freezer for a cold snack.
