This homemade gravy from scratch tastes like KFC gravy! It's easy to make with 6 ingredients in under 10 minutes. Serve it with your favorite mashed potatoes, turkey, or roast chicken!

    About This Recipe

Making gravy at home is incredibly easy and tastes way better than store-bought packets! I find store-bought packets lack the richness and texture of real gravy- they do not include actual fat and rely on cornstarch as a thickener, which gives the gravy a glossier texture rather than smooth and hearty.

My recipe starts by making a roux, which is a mixture of equal parts flour and butter. The roux is heated over medium heat until the flour turns golden and toasty, then a flavorful liquid (in our case, beef broth) is added to make the gravy. The step of making the roux is extremely important because it coats the flour particles with butter, which prevents your gravy from being clumpy.

I used to think homemade gravy needed pan drippings to be tasty, but actually, my recipe does not require that at all. It's very flavorful on its own- though if you do have drippings on hand, you can always add them in for a bit more depth.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Butter: Butter is what gives richness to my gravy recipe. It's also essential for making the roux in the first step.

    Flour: I use all-purpose flour.

Beef broth: This serves as the savory base of the gravy.

Chicken bouillon powder (or paste): Using only liquid broth will not yield a gravy that is flavorful enough, so we also need some bouillon powder or paste. I personally love using Better Than Bouillon roasted chicken paste for its extra-rich flavor, but any bouillon powder or paste will do.

Garlic powder + black pepper: These are my favorite seasonings to include. I like LOTS of black pepper. Feel free to add other spices if you wish. Paprika is a good one, too. Or if you're making a gravy for chicken, some thyme or poultry seasoning is great.

    Instructions

    roux being made in pan.

STEP 1: Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 2-3 minutes until the flour turns golden brown.

    seasonings added to roux.

STEP 2: Stir in the bouillon powder, garlic powder, and black pepper.

beef broth added; gravy simmering for a few minutes.

STEP 3: While whisking constantly, gradually pour in the beef broth. Bring to a simmer and cook until it reaches your desired thickness. If you accidentally make it too thick, just add some water to loosen it back up.
