    About This Recipe

This is the best homemade waffle recipe for a stack of crispy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside waffles, perfect for serving with butter and maple syrup. These waffles come together with pantry staples, no boxed mix, and barely any effort at all. Your whole family will love this recipe!

Simply whisk the dry and wet ingredients separately, then combine to form the batter. Then, pour into a hot waffle iron, and you're done. This easy waffle recipe is also freezer-friendly, so you can prep a big batch and save it for quick future breakfasts.

Pro tip: I've found the type of waffle maker can make a big difference to your waffles! I prefer ones that make thinner waffles where the grates are smaller. I find these ones get crispier and stay crispy for longer. They cook faster, too. If you' care're curious, I use the traditional Cuisinart round waffle maker.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Flour: All-purpose flour is all you need here. Cake flour will make the waffles too delicate, and bread flour will make them dense and chewy.

Baking powder: This is what gives your waffles their lift and light texture. Make sure yours is not expired. Old baking powder won't give you the rise you need.

Sugar: Just a small amount enhances the flavor and helps the waffles get their beautiful golden color on the outside. Since the toppings are usually sweet, you don't need much.

Milk: Whole milk gives you the richest, most tender waffles. Low-fat or non-dairy milks work too, but whole milk really does make a difference.

Eggs: Give the waffles structure and help create their fluffy interior.

Butter: Butter adds richness to the waffles. Since we're already adding salt separately, I recommend using unsalted butter so you can control the salt levels better.

Vanilla extract: A good vanilla extract makes everything taste better. Avoid using fake vanilla extract.

    Instructions

dry ingredients whisked in metal bowl.

STEP 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt, whisking well.

wet ingredients whisked in metal bowl.

STEP 2: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the milk, butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Whisk until combined. The melted butter might solidify here, but it's OK.

STEP 3: Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and whisk until JUST combined.

STEP 4: Preheat your waffle iron and grease it well with butter or nonstick spray. Pour in enough batter to fill your waffle iron (this will vary depending on the size of yours) and close the lid.

STEP 5: Cook until the waffles are deep golden brown and crispy- most waffle irons will let you know when they're ready. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings!

    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 1 ½ cups milk
    • ½ cup melted unsalted butter

    • Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and whisk until JUST combined.
    • Begin preheating your waffle maker.
    • When the waffle maker is ready, spray the inside with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Scoop an appropriate amount of batter inside (be careful not to add too much, otherwise it will overflow as it expands). Cook until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining batter.
