This homemade Apple Crisp has tender, cinnamon apples underneath a crispy and crumbly oat streusel. It's easy to make with only 10 minutes of prep, and it's great for feeding a crowd. One of my favorite fall desserts when apples are in season!

    About This Recipe

Apple crisp is one of those desserts that is incredibly easy to make- all you do is peel and slice a bunch of apples, then top it with a crumble streusel. It basically requires no skill. I always say that if a dessert is featured in home ec class, anyone can do it! And apple crisp was one of those desserts I learned in school.

My apple crisp is a classic recipe that I learned from one of my childhood friends. His mom used to own a cake shop, and I remember she made apple crisp for us a few times. It was so good. This is her recipe, and I am sharing it with you all today.

Granny Smith apples are the best apples to use for desserts. They are slightly more tart, so when they get cooked down, they still retain a nice fruity quality to them. If your apples aren't very flavorful or taste a little flat, I'd recommend adding a tablespoon of lemon juice to brighten everything up.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Apples: You'll need 6 cups of apples, or about 6 medium apples. As I said earlier, Granny Smiths are the best because their tartness balances the sweetness, and they hold their shape better when baked.

Brown Sugar: The main sweetener. You can use light or dark brown sugar.

Cinnamon: Adds a warm, cozy flavor that makes the apple crisp taste like fall.

Nutmeg: I do think adding a pinch of nutmeg brings out more of the delicious apple flavor.

    Salt: Enhances all the flavors.

Streusal topping: For this, you'll need all-purpose flour, brown sugar, oats, and butter. The oats can be either whole rolled oats or quick oats; it doesn't matter.

    Instructions

sliced apples tossed with spices in bowl.

STEP 1: In a large bowl, mix all the filling ingredients

apple filling spread into baking dish.

STEP 2: Spread the filling evenly into a greased baking dish.

streusel being mixed together in bowl.

STEP 3: In a medium bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon together. Cut in the butter with a pastry cutter or fork. Then stir in the oats.

streusel sprinkled on top of apples in baking dish.

STEP 4: Sprinkle over the apples.

apple crisp after baking; golden brown streusel.

STEP 5: Bake for 35-40 minutes until the topping is golden brown.

The topping does not have a measurement for the cinnamon
