plate of hong kong french toast drizzled with condensed milk

Hong Kong-style French Toast

Hong Kong French Toast is one of the most iconic desserts of Hong Kong. It is similar to regular French toast but it is stuffed with peanut butter and deep-fried. It has an impressively tall height from using two or more pieces of thick white bread. I know many you do not like deep-frying so I am making a pan-fried version today. It is easier to make and tastes just as good, but it does look more like regular French toast.

Instructions

  • For each sandwich, spread one tablespoon of peanut butter between all the bread slices, then sandwich them so the peanut butter is on the inside. If you want to, you can cut off the crusts.
  • In a shallow bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  • Soak the sandwich in the batter for 30 seconds on each side. You do not want to soak it for too long or else the final product will be soggy.
  • Melt the butter in a nonstick pan over medium heat. Add the soaked sandwich and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Finally, serve with a generous drizzle of sweetened condensed milk. Enjoy!

Notes

Bread: This recipe makes 2 servings of French toast. I recommend 2-3 slices of bread per serving. If your bread is thick-cut then you only need 2 slices. If your bread is thinner, you will need 3 slices to give the French toast a taller height.
