A&W onion rings

Copycat A&W Onion Rings (Extra Crispy)

When I go to A&W, I always upgrade my fries to onion rings. A&W onion rings are so crispy, and in my opinion, they are the best of any fast food chain. The key to getting that crispy outer coating is using panko breadcrumbs.

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine all seasoning ingredients and mix well.
  • Start by peeling off the skins from the onions. Then, slice the onions into ½-inch thick slices and separate them into their individual rings.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk the rice flour, all-purpose flour, and baking powder. Pour in the beer and whisk until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as we don't want to overdevelop the gluten. The batter should be about the same consistency as a thick pancake batter. If the batter is too thin, the breadcrumbs will fall off during frying. Add extra flour or water as needed.
  • Preheat about 1 inch of oil to 350℉ over medium-high heat. While the oil is preheating, start breading your onion rings. Dip each onion ring in wet batter, then coat with breadcrumbs. Transfer to a tray and continue breading the rest.
  • Fry 6-8 onion rings at a time for 1-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Use a metal spider to gently move them around so they cook evenly. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and immediately season with A&W seasoning salt. Serve with ketchup, and enjoy!
