Sausage rolls were always something I wanted to make, but I stayed away from them because making flaky pastries was always a little bit daunting to me. However, this recipe uses store-bought puff pastry, so you don't need to make your own. I'm also using pre-made sausage meat, so this recipe is super easy!

Pair these with my Tomato Paste Soup for an easy weeknight meal.

    ๐Ÿ– About This Recipe

Today, I'm going to show you how to make super simple 3-ingredient sausage rolls. We'll need frozen puff pastry, store-bought sausage meat, and an egg for brushing. Using premade ingredients saves a ton of time and makes everything way easier. Plus, store-bought puff pastry is arguably better than most homemade puff pastry.

These sausage rolls are the perfect appetizer for sharing with a large group. I've made them dozens of times for potlucks, dinner parties, and holiday gatherings. Everyone always asks for the recipe, and they're always shocked at how simple it is!

For the sausage meat, I'm using the mild Italian sausages from Costco, but you can use whatever you want. The frozen puff pastry is nothing special and just what I found at my local Loblaws store. Here's a picture of what you'll need:

    ๐Ÿ”ช Instructions

Before starting this recipe, thaw your puff pastry as directed on the package. Make sure it's defrosted enough so that it doesn't crack when you roll it out. You can see from my photos below that I was too quick, and they cracked a little in some parts.

STEP 1: Place puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet in half to make 4 rectangles, about 5x10 inches each. Lay each rectangle with the long side facing you.

STEP 2: Divide the sausage mixture into four portions. Shape them into 1-inch-thick logs, and place them in the center of each pastry rectangle.

STEP 3: Brush the top and bottom edges of the pastry with the beaten egg.

STEP 4: Carefully roll the pastries over the sausage mixture to create a log shape. Place each roll with the seam side down.

STEP 5: Use a sharp knife to make diagonal slashes down each roll. Line up all 4 rolls and cut them into 3 equal pieces. If cutting the rolls is difficult, pop them in the freezer for 20 minutes to firm up.

STEP 6: Place each roll on a sheet tray lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with beaten egg.

STEP 7: Bake in a 400ยฐF oven for 15 to 20 minutes until the pastry is puffed and golden on top. The internal temperature of the sausage should reach at least 160ยฐF. Enjoy!

    Ingredients

    • 1 package frozen puff pastry (defrosted according to package instructions)
    • 1 pound pork sausages (see notes)
    • 1 large egg (beaten)

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 400โ„‰ and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    • Remove sausage casings and place the meat in a bowl.
    • Place puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet in half to make 4 rectangles, about 5x10 inches each. Lay each rectangle with the long side facing you.
    • Divide the sausage mixture into four portions. Shape them into 1-inch-thick logs, and place them in the center of each pastry rectangle.
    • Brush the top and bottom edges of the pastry with the beaten egg.
    • Carefully roll the pastries over the sausage mixture to create a log shape. Place each roll with the seam side down.
    • Use a sharp knife to make diagonal slashes down each roll. Line up all 4 rolls and cut them into 3 equal pieces. If cutting the rolls is difficult, pop them in the freezer for 20 minutes to firm up.
    • Place each roll on the parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the tops with beaten egg
    • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the pastry is puffed and golden on top.

    Notes

Pork Sausages: You can use any type of pork sausage meat. I recommend Italian sausages from Costco.
Freezing: Both baked and unbaked sausage rolls can be frozen for up to 3 months. Freeze unbaked rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 2 hours until semi-solid. Then, transfer to a ziplock bag for long-term storage. When it's time to bake, bake them directly from frozen in a 350โ„‰ oven for 25-30 minutes.

Easy and delicious. I used mild Italian sausage, squirted it from it's skin, and it worked perfectly. Everyone was impressed!
