🧄 The garlic spread
The most important part of any garlic bread is the garlic butter spread. Even though it only has a handful of ingredients, many online recipes fall flat because they only use one type of garlic or lack seasoning.
My family used to run a pizza restaurant, so I know all the secrets to making the best restaurant-quality garlic butter.
Pizza Hut's garlic spread contains two forms of garlic: freshly minced and garlic salt. Garlic salt combines salt and powdered garlic, which has a sweeter and nuttier flavor than fresh garlic. It tastes completely different from freshly minced garlic and is usually the missing ingredient in making restaurant-style garlic bread at home.
For my copycat recipe, I add additional seasonings like black pepper and oregano to make it even more delicious.
🧂 Ingredients
- Bread: Any bread with a soft interior and chewy crust works well. Baguettes or ciabatta bread would be my first pick. Milk bread, potato bread, and sourdough are also great options.
- Butter: Use unsalted butter so we can control the salt. If you only have salted butter, replace the garlic salt with garlic powder.
- Garlic: Freshly minced will give you the best flavor. The finer you mince it, the stronger the flavor will be. I like using a Microplane grater for grating.
- Garlic Salt: The secret ingredient! It provides saltiness and contains garlic powder, which amplifies the garlic flavor in the spread.
- Black Pepper: Use a pepper grinder or pestle and mortar to grind the pepper yourself. Freshly cracked pepper has a spicier and more fragrant flavor.
- Oregano (or Italian Seasoning): Gives that delicious Italian flavor.
Variations
- Roasted garlic - Wrap the garlic in a tin foil pouch and roast in the oven for 40 minutes at 375℉.
- Spicy - Add ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the garlic butter spread.
- Cheesy garlic bread - Add shredded mozzarella cheese to each slice of bread before popping it into the oven.
🔪 Instructions
STEP 1: Mix butter, garlic, garlic salt, black pepper, and oregano in a small bowl.
STEP 2: Spread a small amount of garlic butter on each slice of bread. Transfer slices to a baking sheet butter-side up.
STEP 3: Bake in a 450℉ oven on the second rack from the top for 5-7 minutes until the edges are golden brown and crispy. Serve immediately.
💭 Top Tips
- Start with good quality bread, preferably with a nice chewy crust and fluffy, airy interior. Some good options include baguettes, ciabatta, sourdough, milk bread, and potato bread.
- Use unsalted butter, so you have better control of the salt levels. If you only have salted butter, replace the garlic salt with garlic powder.
- Use fresh garlic for the best flavor. And remember, the finer you cut the garlic, the more powerful the flavor will be.
🥡 Storage & Leftovers
Storing: Pizza Hut garlic bread is best eaten fresh since bread tends to dry out in the fridge. However, you can store leftover garlic bread in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Reheating: Reheat leftovers by baking for 3-5 minutes at 350℉ until warmed through. If you have an air fryer, pop it in at 350℉ for 2-3 minutes until warm and crispy.
📖 Recipe FAQs
Pizza Hut garlic bread is made of bread, garlic, garlic salt, oregano, and margarine. I replace margarine with real butter for my copycat recipe and add black pepper for extra flavor.
Use fresh garlic and garlic powder for restaurant-style garlic bread, as they taste completely different. Fresh garlic is extremely fragrant and pungent, whereas garlic powder is nuttier and sweeter. Most restaurants use some form of powdered garlic, so you should use it if you want the best copycat taste.
Yes, you can use garlic paste instead of minced garlic. But keep in mind paste has a stronger flavor, so adjust accordingly. Start with half the amount, then taste to see if you need more.
