    About This Recipe

My family used to own a pizza restaurant, so I've made a ton of pizza sauce in my life! This recipe is based on the one we used at our restaurant, but I've simplified it slightly. Instead of using canned whole tomatoes (which need to be blended), I use canned tomato sauce to make it quicker and easier.

My dad always told me the secret to our restaurant's pizza sauce (and yes, I can share this now since my parents are retired) was to add a ton of garlic. That's why, for this recipe, I add a whole tablespoon of garlic powder. At the restaurant, we actually used jarred minced garlic, but at home, I usually just use garlic powder because it's easier.

One thing many people do not realize is that pizza sauce should be slightly salty. It's the base of the pizza after all, and a lot of the toppings you add will not have any salt to them. For example, any vegetables and cheese are usually mild. So when you taste the sauce, and it tastes a bit salty, don't worry, it will all balance out after the pizza comes together.

    Key Ingredients

    ingredients prepped in bowls.

Tomato sauce: For a quick and easy recipe, I use canned tomato sauce. If you want, you can also blend canned whole tomatoes, but make sure to drain the juices before blending so the sauce doesn't get too runny.

Tomato paste: Tomato paste is concentrated tomatoes and helps thicken the pizza sauce. A tiny can has up to 6-8 tomatoes!

Italian seasoning: You'll need 2 tablespoons. Yes, 2 tablespoons! Again, we want our pizza sauce to be very well seasoned.

Dried oregano: In addition to the Italian seasoning (which already contains oregano), I add extra oregano to give it even more flavor.

Garlic powder: You can also use minced garlic, but I prefer the ease of just scooping garlic powder.

Sugar: To balance the tart flavors of the tomato.

Salt and black pepper: To elevate all the flavors.

Red pepper flakes: Add just a tiny bit of heat. Totally optional if you don't want any spice.

    Instructions

ingredients whisked together in metal bowl.

STEP 1: Add all the ingredients to a medium bowl and mix until combined. Use immediately or store covered in the refrigerator for up to one week.
