Introducing my new favorite way to make grilled cheese: in the air fryer! It's super easy and the results are incredibly crispy. Just make a grilled cheese like normal, then pop it in the air-fryer for 6-8 minutes.
The recipe is basically the same as a regular grilled cheese, so all the usual rules still apply. We'll need to cook it low and slow so the cheese has time to melt. Brush the outside with butter, of course. And I highly recommend using a combination of two cheeses for the most complex flavor.
A long time ago, I use to be in the Monterey Jack camp, but nowadays I crave a classic grilled cheese with cheddar. However, cheddar cheese does not have the best meltability, so I like to combine it with some mozzarella cheese to get the best of both worlds: flavor and that cheese pull.
Key Ingredients

Bread: You can use any kind of bread you want, but I always recommend sourdough because of the tang that it adds. Try to get bread that doesn't have too many large holes in the crumb.
Cheeses: Cheddar cheese will always be the GOAT. I recommend having two kinds of cheese for flavor and meltability. Mozzarella is super melty, so I like to include that. I also think shredded cheese melts better, so shred it if you can.
Butter: I know a lot of people like to use mayonnaise, but I love the classic taste of butter on a grilled cheese. Ultimately, you can choose whatever you want. Or mix a little of both.
Instructions

STEP 1: Spread butter on both sides of the bread.

STEP 2: Add cheese.

STEP 3: Combine the bread slices and place the sandwich in the air fryer basket.

STEP 4: Air-fry for 3-4 minutes. Flip and air-fry for another 3-4 minutes until golden brown.

Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons softened butter (mayonnaise works too)
- 2 slices sandwich bread
- โ cup shredded cheddar cheese (or whatever cheese you want)
- โ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Preheat your air fryer to 370ยฐF.
- Spread the butter on each slice of bread.
- Place one piece of bread in front of you, butter side down.
- Add the cheese, then top with the other bread slice (butter side up).
- Transfer to the air fryer. Cook for 3โ4 minutes on one side, then flip and cook another 3โ4 minutes, until the bread is golden and crispy.
